Gutters Guide

Signs Your Gutters Need Replacement

How to identify failing gutters before they cause expensive water damage to your fascia, foundation, and interior — and what to do about it.

Why Gutters Matter More Than Most Homeowners Realize

Gutters have one job: move water off your roof and away from your home's foundation. When they fail — through damage, age, or improper installation — that water goes somewhere else: behind the fascia board, against the siding, down the foundation wall, or into your basement. The damage that results is rarely cheap.

Storm Ridge Roofing installs seamless aluminum gutters throughout East Tennessee and includes gutter inspection as part of every free roof inspection. The six signs below are what our crew looks for when evaluating whether gutters need repair or full replacement.

Visible Cracks, Holes, or Rust

Small cracks can be patched, but widespread cracking or rust indicates the metal has degraded throughout. Once aluminum gutters begin to corrode heavily or develop multiple holes, the cost of ongoing repairs typically exceeds the cost of replacement.

Gutters Pulling Away From the Fascia

Gutters are attached to the fascia board behind them. When gutters sag or pull away, it usually means the fasteners have failed — often because the fascia itself has rotted from years of moisture contact with failing gutters. At this point both the gutters and the fascia board need attention.

Persistent Sagging or Improper Pitch

Gutters must maintain a slight downward slope toward the downspout to drain properly. When gutters sag in the middle or lose their pitch, water pools instead of draining — causing overflow, added weight from debris, and accelerated deterioration.

Peeling Paint or Water Stains on Siding

If you notice peeling paint, streaking, or water staining on the siding below your gutters, water is overflowing or leaking at the joint. This is one of the most visible early signs that your gutters are no longer doing their job.

Water Damage in the Basement or Crawl Space

Gutters exist primarily to direct water away from your foundation. If you have moisture intrusion in a basement or crawl space and no other obvious source, failed gutters — spilling water directly against the foundation — are a likely contributor.

Mold, Mildew, or Rot Near the Roofline

Overflowing gutters keep the fascia and soffit consistently wet, creating ideal conditions for rot and mold growth. If you see dark staining, soft spots on the fascia, or visible mold near the roofline, it is likely gutter-related and needs to be addressed quickly.

Seamless vs. Sectional Gutters

Sectional gutters are sold in 10-foot lengths at home improvement stores and joined on-site with connectors. Every joint is a potential leak point — and over time, thermal expansion causes those joints to open. Seamless gutters are custom-fabricated on-site from a continuous run of aluminum, eliminating all seams except at corners and downspout connections. Storm Ridge installs seamless gutters only.
